The first day of your journey will have you arrive to Paro, Bhutan's only international airport. At the airport you will be met by your Bhutanese guide and driver and make the 55 kilometer / 34 mile drive to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. Along the way, you will stop at the Tamchhog Lhakang Temple. This temple has a beautiful bridge spanning the Paro River. This bridge was rebuilt in 2005 using some chain links dating back to the 15th century. You will also stop to photograph village life in either Bondey or Namseling. In Thimphu, you will settle into your hotel and if time permits, explore Trashi Choe Dzong (fortress), which lies along the banks of the Wang Chhu River. Drive time from the Paro International Airport to Thimphu is about 1.5 hours.
Day 2: Thimphu
You will spend a full day exploring Bhutan's fascinating capital town of Thimphu! We will start the day by visiting the Kuensel Phodrang Buddha Stupa, which is one of the biggest buddha statue's in the world. This statue lies on a hill overlooking the Thimphu valley from the south and stands 51.5 meters/169 feet in height. Then we will visit the famous Thimphu Memorial Chorten, which was built in 1974. This is seen as the most iconic landmark of Thimphu and is an important place of worship for the local residents. Then we visit Simply Bhutan, a small museum that shows the life and history of Bhutanese life and culture. Later, we will visit the Tango Buddhist institute which was founded in the 12th century. It is the most prominent Buddhist learning institute of Bhutan. Many famous religious leaders known, as Je Khenpo, have gone through a nine year study course here.
Day 3: Thimphu to Punakha
Today you have a very scenic drive from Thimphu to Punakha valley. This beautiful drive goes along beautiful hills and rivers and via the famous Dochu La Pass. 6 Day Western Bhutan Adventure
The Bhutan government tourism council has 2 different rates for travelers. One is a low season rate and the other the high season rate. Prices for journeys in Bhutan are higher in the high season and lower in low season, which is why Himalaya Journey offers 2 prices for all Bhutan tours. In Bhutan, the high season months are March, April and May and then again in September, October and November. The low season months are June, July and August and again in December, January and February.
The high season months are generally dry and offer better views of the mountains. The low season months of June, July and August can bring heavy monsoon rains. The low season months of December, January and February are generally clear and dry, but can be a little cold in higher elevation areas.
